Tale Of Souls Chapter Seventeen
The video’s started and all I can see is an innocent face that should never have died this early. The death date on the certificates puts her at about 32-33, and there’s a chance that things may be the same for Rana. I’m trying to listen, there’s no speech yet. The date on the video was much earlier than the certificates, you can see it in the corner of the screen.
“You weren’t meant to get this as late as you did.” Lily’s voice rang out from the television speakers.
No shit, you should’ve said something – leaving us in the dust like this isn’t helping – we could’ve helped you!
“There’s no way this could’ve been prevented. While I didn’t know about – “ She paused and started coughing into a small cloth. It seemed to have stains on it. “Sorry, the coughing is getting worse – I don’t have a lot more time. I didn’t know about this until it was too late. They coded this in like a ticking DNA time bomb. I hate to break it to you but your local Redhead, he’s not got a lot longer either. Ask him about his phantom wounds.”
“Wait, Rana?” I blinked and looked over and grabbed at his shirt and pulled it up to see large bandages covering his body. “Holy fucking shit what have you been hiding?”
“It’s in the early stages, just shut up and watch the video.” Rana sighed.
“This thing you’re watching – should be the only copy. I’m aware that you think there are others that should know. “ She stopped for a second as the camera turned around onto someone else and she continued. “Tensei and Terrin have been secretly helping me – and hiding this from you all while you try and work through what’s plaguing the world.”
“I’m gonna fucking rip his alien balls off.” Noah growled, “The fucking nerve.”
“Not if I don’t get to him first.” Kristoff yelled, holding his thumb and index finger to the bridge of his nose as if he had a headache coming on. “They said they were helping me FIND HER – not fucking hide from me that she was dying.”
“We had to hide this from you at her request. This is why we haven’t been around as much, we ourselves had to find her. Some of Shiro and Izuchi’s final funds went towards her medical costs. We’re aware sadly there’s not alot of it left, and hopefully by the time you see this – another benefactor has come forward. But aside from Lily’s grave illness we’ve got a warning for you to heed. “ Tensei’s voice boomed across the speakers, and you could see him moving his head towards Terrin who was sitting next to him behind the camera.
“The Makara’s have more than a war at stake. There’s more than just the puzzle to solve. We’re possibly looking at the end of days by the time this is all over. They’re planning on testing these DNA bombs on more people. In its early stages of development those who have it coded in, aren’t infectious. By the time you might see this video, it might be.” Terrin sighed, and turned the camera back to Lily.
“I’m aware that they’re planning on creating an unknown pandemic. Mimicking a known future virus that they’ve seen with their own eyes.” Lily stopped again for a moment and held her cloth to her mouth and began to cough again. Terrin rushed to grab a glass of water for her and helped wipe off her mouth.
I don’t know how I’m going to handle watching the rest of this. I’m also watching Rana’s level of fear peak up after realizing he’s suffering from the same thing. Early days, but how long are early days going to last?
“They will blame you for it, and most of all – they’ll look at our mark and think that’s something to do with it. They think we’ve not been human all along, and they’ll say what they can to harm your progress against fixing time.” Lily sighed, continuing on. “No, they’ll do more than that. Yet I need to let you know – that your redhead is lying, he’s only got a couple more years left depending on when you see this. Assuming it’s later than I’m intending – he’s lucky to last until you all hit forty.”
“Rana… are you ok?” Psilas looked up at Rana from on the floor and poked him in the knee.
“I didn’t know how far along this was, I’m not trying to hide anything.” Rana sighed, tears rolling down his face. “I knew I possibly was – I knew ok – I knew I was going to die eventually from it, but I was hoping I had longer than I thought.”
“We’ll make the most of it, and not run away like Lily did.” Psilas smiled, “I wish I could’ve – wait hold on.”
We all stared at Psilas for a moment, including Saitou. We all burst out laughing for a moment as Rana paused the video.
“You realize you just started to say something adorable.” I smiled and tapped Psilas in the shoulder – and then nuzzled my nose into his younger self’s hair.
“Well, I realize you, and my uncles are all technically her – but I didn’t get to meet her before she left. I know that technically I shouldn’t have been able to because I shouldn’t be here with my younger self – but it’s a bit late for that.” Psilas sniffled for a second and grabbed some of the kleenex and blew his nose.
“You’re ok, we understand.” Rana pat Psilas on the head, and smiled, “I know everyone says i’m just like her – but even i’m not her anymore.”
“Before we go on, how long have you known you’re dying?” Saitou piped up, and while it wasn’t his place to literally ask about the others, he’s married to me – the others are family.
“Literally dying, only recently. At risk of dying? Since they managed to split me off and try to make me into a pawn. Kristoff won’t remember half of it since he’s been trying to fix time earlier than the rest of us.” Rana sighed and unpaused the video.
“I had to leave, there was no way in hell with everything going on that Izuchi could take care of me let alone Shiro or even Mike. They’re all aware of where I am, and sadly insurance doesn’t cover everything. I’m hoping that this video also makes it to Mom and Dad. I checked everything, sadly nobody’s insurance was going to cover this. “ Lily smiled as Tensei checked all the machines that were hooked up to her.
“Mom, Dad if you’re listening – i’m sorry that I wasn’t able to tell you what was going on. Justin, you stop crying. Rana, you stop blowing your nose into Kristoff’s t-shirt you’re wearing. Ryan, I know you’re not paying attention and you’re backseating from the past – so Noah, please take care of him no matter what time you’re in promise me? Kristoff, go see our parents – i’m aware they may have seen you yet. Sai, keep your husband in check. Psilas, I see you – I’ve seen you in my visions. I love you, I love all of you and there’s nothing more I can do to stop this.” Her breathing became more shallow as she tried to pull more words out.
“I don’t have much more time, and I am truly sorry that I’m unable to see you before… The doctors are baffled, and said I’m on my last days, if not hours. I can’t even keep food down anymore, and I’m lucky if I can drink water. If you’re wondering why it’s even more severe?” Lily sighed and looked at Tensei for a moment.
“The corruption of the DNA took Reiko’s half before it could kill Lily. The ones who coded this in Lily’s DNA must’ve known that Reiko would try and either save Lily or something else would happen where they would fuse together. Reiko’s been gone for a few weeks now, and we were able to separate her from Lily’s body and I snuck out a portal to bury her near our home in Arashi.” Tensei nodded, “Are you ok – Lily? … Lily?!?”
The noises on the machines became louder – out of sync beats telling them something was wrong. That a heart, a brainwave of something of the sort – had stopped working. Terrin rushed to get the medicine to try and get her to respond only to find Tensei stopping him. It seems that sadly Lily’s last minutes were the strength she had to make the video.
My gut, my heart and everything else about me sank to the floor. I literally just watched a version of myself die on video. This means that nobody found her for official records until the date listed on the certificate. We’re thirty eight right now, and the date listed on the certificate was only about five years ago. The date on the video? Was ten years ago.
I hadn’t seen her since we were twenty five. Things were getting sort of heated with the two of us and with Ryan around and us two doing more training and education to get past our programming – we just didn’t see her as much. We’d text, we’d email occasionally – but not much more than that. We’d moved out of the dorm room we had and had our own upgraded living areas. I’ve been in the same one since then, and Sai moved out of his apartment into mine.
“I promise you we didn’t do this – we didn’t know. If you’re still watching, take care of Rana. I know i’ve made stupid passes at him in the hallway knowing he was of Lily – but it’s not just that. He’s on his way out, don’t let him out of your sight. I’ll be back at some time to help with your future fight, but let me work through things my way. Tensei has said he’s likely to try and return to Arashi if he can legally fight there. “ Terrin turned the camera back towards his soul mirror.
Tensei is Terrin’s soul mirror, like Sai is technically Mike’s origin soul mirror. Mako is Izuchi’s soul mirror. Reiko was Lily’s soul mirror. The rest of us didn’t have any known mirrors, but there’s so much back story to it that it confused us.
“I’m aware that Makoto, that you’re not watching – but if those of you know where he is – let him know I’ve returned to our homeland and that I’m trying to reach out. The laws at this stage permit me to move back and forth only because of citizenship – I’m aware they’re trying to fix it so nobody can move through the portals except those in the government. There are countries you can fly to and it’s legal still no matter what, but the americans have such a pull with the Makara’s that it’s going to be an extremely hard future ahead.” Tensei sighed trying to hold back his tears.
With that, the video ended.
