Tale of Souls Chapter Twelve
“OI. SPARKY. Settle the fuck down, your brain isn’t going to de-ravel before i get you back to Izu at this rate.” Mike was screaming at me. LOUDLY that is, even more than usual. “Do me a favor, next time you get in a rustling bustle of vampiric zombies… CALL THE SAFE WORD and get me out to save your ass.”
It wasn’t a vagabond roll of vampiric zombies. My car crashed as soon as the time-bomb of sorts finished doing it’s rounds. I didn’t make it back to the haven, not yet at least. I ended up crashing into the in-between layers of time. It felt like I crashed into a large pane of glass, with it’s shards of time literally embedding into my arms and forehead.
“I don’t even know who i am let alone where the fuck i am right now.” I wasn’t far off that, my brain was trying to fold in on itself. I couldn’t tell if I was me, or if I was Ryan or if I was Lily or anyone else I’ve ever encountered.
“That’s because your memories are failing you again, like me you’re a broken record.. only you’re the broken puppy… ”
I sighed, and allowed Mike to keep picking the shards of shrapnel stuck in my arms and my forehead. I wish It wasn’t a crash like I explained, I wish it was fighting. That device that screwed me over? That’s why I crashed.
“Stop trying to drive like you’re fast and furious, you’re still young. Your eyes haven’t changed, you got time to work through this.”
“What puzzle are you trying to get me to do now Kakumei?” My mind isn’t settling, I can’t place his name. I just know what comes into my mind and my mind isn’t to be trusted at this stage. I mean what do you expect for ramming into a large pane of what felt like glass but was a barrier to the lines of time?
“Sparkster… call me Mike.”
“Er, but you’re the …” I kept blinking, I felt like I was having a fit, almost like a seizure. I couldn’t keep the room from spinning, it wasn’t vertigo – I just couldn’t focus.
“I could kick Skylar.”
“Well I can too, but that doesn’t help what’s going on..” I tried to retort, but my jaw muscles kept clenching and I felt like I was losing myself.
“Justin, focus. Stop getting all panic in the manic-ness going on – I’m trying to save your dumb ass from the darkness within.”
What he means is sadly literal. Carpet shuffling, dust sweeping, memory hiding – whatever you wanna call it. I don’t deal with shit, I just shove it aside and let it rot. Like the others, I’m meant to be a government weapon. My darkness isn’t just my insanity, it’s the programming that I’ve managed to push down to a dull roar over the years. Yet every time I’ve been taught to walk through time like this – it starts to screw with me.
That book I saw in the arena area? The one that Sai scribbled into? That’s a puzzle, it’s a puzzle that’s got to get solved. It’s a bunch of keys to a bunch of doors. The problem is the logic has been thrown out of the window and there’s no end pieces. What started as a thousand piece Thomas Kinkade nightmare ended up as twenty different puzzles from different times and wavelengths.
“Yea, it’s a puzzle – there’s shit to do. Think, think buster -” Mike rustled my hair and brushed my bangs back, looking straight into my eyes. “I can spread my wings, and fly you all away if time is willing. My time isn’t willing, but you got your illusionary wings, lemme drop you a bottle of this dye so you can stop being so boring and brown… Throw some red in that- become bright.”
“Puzzle pieces, and hair dye.”
My hair used to be black and red for the longest time. I had the ability to tell it to fuck off later in life. Kristoff and I – the ones with the black and red eyes, the black and red hair. The devils in disguise per se. I can’t keep hiding it, it’s who I am. I only did it cause I was tired, I was tired of having to explain myself when my eyes wouldn’t settle.
I chose them to be turquoise. Just as Kristoff chose them to look green. For the longest time we thought that had to do with him being similar to Rana. Yet Rana’s are more of a bright nearly neon green. The devil within wants to play, is there any way I can get him to play by the rules to pick up the pieces and get ahold of what’s going on?
Mike laughed.. “I’m a Manic Panic angel to you kids.. you , Skye… Rye… Elsa, Rannie, Jess even though she drives me nuts… everyone that’s passed through here. Even people you’ll meet in time that passed through before you came here… I’ll get you out of your disaster, maybe not now .. but in time.”
The problem is, what he’s not remembering at this point – because he’s not the same MIke i’m used to seeing. He hasn’t soul bonded with Saitou yet, and so this is Mike at his absolute limit before he breaks.
“Can I hold you to that?”
I bloody fucking hope he’s understanding me because my brain is starting to turn into mush. It feels like it’s shutting down with each piece of time shards coming out of my skin. I turned around and for a flash second I saw a mirror of another place like this. A golden eyed but brown haired figure stood at the edge of the mirror and waved like a hyper teenager at me. I’m aware of what it is – and who it is, but I’m not comprehending it.
“Yes. The time will come, and I’ll smile and wave – reminding you that I told you I’d be here.. and that someday I’d fix everything.”
He literally just did that.
Someone please tell Mike not to scare the living shit out of me in the past and in the future.
